One of the most common causes of uselessly wasted disk space is the existence of duplicate files. Some would even say that duplicate files are almost as inevitable as life and taxes. Anyway, if disk space is an important matter to you, then so are the duplicate files. In this case, the Dup Scout application is of great help.
Dup Scout impressed me from the first time I launched it. The professional-looking, neat, well-structured interface makes it obvious that the people who created this program really cared for their work. The undeniable attention for details is a big plus in my book, and so is the fact that the interface manages to make things simple and clear. The next thing that got my attention and eventually my appreciation is the complexity and the comprehensiveness of the provided features. This makes the duplicate file search and removal process fully customizable and puts it completely under your control. You can search for duplicate files in various locations, such as folders, disks, network shares or even NAS storage devices. You can also apply filters and manage exclusion lists. Furthermore, you can generate complete reports that you can then export to various types of file formats. These are just a few of many things that Dup Scout lets you do regarding the duplicate file scanning process.
No talk about this program would be complete without mentioning many actions that it lets you automatically perform with the duplicate files once they are detected. The duplicates can be easily replaced with shortcuts or hard links, moved to another directory, compressed or deleted.
In conclusion, although there are more feature-rich editions of this application (the non-free Pro, Ultimate and Server), even this standard free version offers enough to earn a recommendation from all my heart.
